In spite of this winter’s harsh weather, the construction industry is coming on strong. Construction employment is testing levels not seen in years.
According to new Labor Department figures, the industry added 39,000 jobs in January. The total number of jobs created in the last year now sits at 308,000, which is the highest mark since February 2009.
Additionally, the unemployment rate for the sector dropped to 9.8 percent. The number of construction workers looking for jobs in January declined to 811,000, which was the lowest January level since 2000. The winter makes for difficult construction conditions, but this recent data may be an encouraging sign of things to come.
